A magnesite mining operation will be established shortly after the SA Government confirmed that they will be able to receive a grant of $200,000.
The grant comes as part of the Upper Spencer Gulf and Outback Futures Program, which is a fund consisting of $2 million available to resource projects that aim to diversify and expand the Upper Spencer Gulf and Outback resource communities.
The mining site will be developed and operated by Leigh Creek Magnesite Pty Ltd. Leigh Creek Magnesite are currently one of South Australia’s most active mining companies.
After on-site crushing, the ore mined will be transported off-site for processing before being sent to the USA and Europe.
The Leigh Creek magnesite will be located 20 kilometres from the Leigh Creek Township and is home to the world’s largest fine-grained magnesite deposit. The mining and processing of magnesite ore had not previously been undertaken in South Australia.
Regional Development Minister Geoff Brock spoke of the positives the project will bring to the local community.
“This project will create jobs and business opportunities for people living in the Leigh Creek township and surrounds.”
“Contractors will undertake the mining, transport and associated works which will create significant opportunities for local businesses.”
“Projects awarded funding through the Upper Spencer Gulf and Outback Futures Program will stimulate new business activity, support stronger communities, and create job opportunities in the region.”
It is expected that the project will provide up to 15 jobs.
