SOUTH Australia’s key Outback transport route, the Strzelecki Track, has received a $1.2 million upgrade.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Warren Truss said the works were funded under the Australian Government’s $2.1 billion Roads to Recovery programme.

“The Roads to Recovery programme is an incredibly important program designed to improve safety, economic and social outcomes by maintaining and upgrading key local roads throughout Australia, especially in rural and remote areas,” Mr Truss said.

“The Australian Government is funding hundreds of projects like this across Australia, ensuring Australia’s national road network is safe and efficient.”

South Australian Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Stephen Mullighan said the upgrade was completed on time and on budget.

“Works included cement stabilisation, which strengthens the road surface against flooding, and the installation of concrete walls at creek crossings,” Mr Mullighan said.

“The South Australian Government has submitted a proposal to Infrastructure Australia to seal the Strzelecki Track to help unlock the wealth of mineral resources in the region, providing jobs and an economic boost to the state.

“Sealing the Strzelecki Track to make it an all-weather road will help unlock oil and gas exploration and production in the Cooper and Eromanga basins, and we are looking to partner with the Commonwealth to move forward with this vital infrastructure project.”

Federal Member for Grey Rowan Ramsey said the upgrade helped secure a crucial link to the north to from Lyndhurst to Innamincka as well as the Moomba gas fields.

“These essential works will help maintain business access to the Far North as well as improving road durability and safety for all travellers,” Mr Ramsey said.

“In the past two years, seven floodways have been upgraded, and this project adds another four improved floodways, targeting creeks with very large catchment areas that could potentially cause safety hazards to the travelling public.

“These upgrades are not major, but will make a difference. The region will continue to grow as a gas producer and help underwrite SA’s future and as such, will need a much larger investment in the medium term to cope with the load.”
