New design plans for Adelaide Festival Centre’s King William Road project have been announced as part of the next phase of Adelaide Festival Plaza’s $900 million redevelopment.
As part of the plans, a new vertical-louvered façade that will include sizeable entertainment and media screens will replace the previous glazed façade in the Festival Theatre’s Lyrics corporate function areas.
The new facade will hide some brand new cooling towers that are replacing on the existing towers on the Hajek Plaza, which will be dismantled in order to progress the redevelopment of the Festival Centre’s car park.
The designs have also incorporated a newly designed vehicle drop-off point, developed after public feedback as part of the development approval process.
Housing and Urban Development Minister Stephen Mullighan spoke of the importance of the project.
“These works will revitalise the north eastern façade of the Adelaide Festival Centre and are designed to integrate with the centre’s new Northern Promenade and all of the other elements of the Festival Plaza development.
The Festival Plaza redevelopment, which includes the Festival Centre upgrade, is one of the most important infrastructure projects that will improve the way locals, tourists and all visitors to Adelaide enjoy our great city.
The plaza’s transformation will reshape a long-neglected part of the Adelaide Riverbank into a focal point for festivals, events, sporting and the arts, for people to meet and enjoy the renewed vibrancy of the city of Adelaide.”
The releases of the designs have come after legislation was passed in Parliament last week to allow for the Festival Plaza construction to go ahead.
The legislation in question was the ‘ASER’ bill which allows the State Government to have complete control of the management of the site during construction on behalf of the adjoining properties, some of which include the Adelaide Festival Centre, Intercontinental Adelaide, SkyCity Casino, Adelaide Railway Station and Riverside Centre.
