An upgrade of a major rural road connecting the upper Yorke Peninsula towns of Bute and Kulpara has begun today.
A four kilometre section of the Bute to Kulpara Road, north of Kulpara, will be reconstructed in the first stage of the three-year project.
Acting Transport and Infrastructure Minister Tom Koutsantonis said in total more than 20 kilometres of the rural arterial road will be resealed between the Copper Coast Highway and Millard Road.
“This upgrade will greatly benefit the local Yorke Peninsula community and motorists travelling to or through the region,” Mr Koutsantonis said.
“The State Government is spending $1.6 million on this first stage of the Bute to Kulpara Road upgrade, and more than $9 million in total over the three-year lifetime of this project.
“The result will be safer driving for the almost 500 vehicles which use this road every day.”
Mr Koutsantonis said the project honours a commitment the State Government made to the Regional Development Minister and Member for Frome, Geoff Brock.
Mr Brock said the upgrade would be crucial to improving safety on an important rural road.
“Too many people die on country roads every year and while all road users are responsible for their own safety, projects such as these are also vital,” Mr Brock said.
“The State Government has also committed to spending $3.5 million over three years to upgrade another crucial rural arterial road, the Laura to Gladstone Road.”
From today, the Bute to Kulpara Road will be reduced to one lane and speed limits restricted to 25kmh as a temporary seal is applied.
