Regional Development Minister, Geoff Brock says a new $1.2 million terminal at Port Augusta Airport being officially opened today is a great example of the three levels of government working together for the benefit of their local community.
Speaking at the opening today, Mr Brock said the State Government had contributed $428,750 towards the project through the Enterprise Zone Fund Upper Spencer Gulf and Outback.
“The Commonwealth supported our grant with $435,600 and the Port Augusta City Council contributed just over $360,000 towards the redevelopment,” Mr Brock said.
“This joint funding recognises the importance of the airport to the economic security and community well-being of the city of Port Augusta and surrounding areas.
“Port Augusta Airport is a vital link for the local community, local businesses and the region.
“This upgrade is critical in reinforcing Port Augusta’s role to strategically service mining, processing and infrastructure developments in the Far North.
“The upgrade to the car parking facilities means the airport will be able to offer secure parking for those fly-in, fly-out mining workers who choose to make Port Augusta their home.
“The airport also is a 24 hour critical access hub for the Royal Flying Doctor Service,” Mr Brock said.
“This upgrade will support the quality and reliability of those services, as well as removing restrictions on general aircraft movement on the airstrip apron.
“”The upgrade also means the airport will now comfortably service the predicted increase of around 5,000 passengers over the next five years as both general passenger and mining charter numbers grow.
“The upgrade will also cater for the interstate and overseas tourists visiting the region.
“It’s a great result for the city of Port Augusta, the region and for South Australia,” Mr Brock said.
