Construction of the first new South Eastern Freeway interchange in almost 20 years has begun.

The long-anticipated project will involve the construction of on and off ramps in both directions at Bald Hills Road after a competitive tender was awarded to South Australian business, Bardavcol.

The Federal Assistant Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Jamie Briggs said the start of major construction on the number one infrastructure priority for the region was exciting.

“The Australian Government committed $16 million to building this interchange because we know that the Mount Barker district is projected to almost double in the next 20 years, making it one of the fastest growing regions in South Australia,” Mr Briggs said.

“The works will spread traffic demands across the road network, allowing drivers to avoid central Mount Barker, Littlehampton and Nairne, and reducing congestion at the Adelaide Road interchange, which is nearing capacity.

“I am also glad that the works will include the installation of a new roundabout at the junction of Old Princes Highway and Bald Hills Road, improving safety and accommodating for increased traffic volumes.

“Major construction starting today marks a significant milestone and means we are one step closer to this project being complete by mid next year.” Mr Brigg said.

The South Australian Transport and Infrastructure Minister Stephen Mullighan said the project would support about 55 jobs during construction.

“This is just one of a number of infrastructure projects underway or about to start around the state, providing a boost to the South Australian economy,” he said.

“With the Darlington Upgrade, the Torrens to Torrens project, the O-Bahn tunnel and the massive investment in road maintenance and safety upgrades in the State Budget, many hundreds of construction jobs are secure.”

Following a competitive tender, the $27 million project was re-scoped to include four ramps providing access to and from Adelaide and Murray Bridge.
