Increased Safety Measures for North Adelaide Streets

Posted On June 23, 2016

Adelaide City Council has recently completed the installation of lighting, wayfinding signs and CCTV in North Adelaide as part of a project funded by the Australian Government’s Safer Streets Programme.

The Safer Streets Programme aims to enhance community safety and security by reducing street crime, violence and antisocial behaviour and increasing feelings of safety in the community.

Additional lighting has been installed along the western end of Pennington Terrace and along Palmer Place, improving safety for those walking and parking in the area at night including hospital staff and students at the local residential colleges.

The project also included three monitored CCTV cameras. A fourth CCTV camera has been funded by Council. The cameras cover high use and late-night use areas including Women’s and Children’s Hospital, and licensed venues in O’Connell Street and Melbourne Street.

City of Adelaide Lord Mayor Martin Haese said that these improvements will boost safety for those living, working and visiting North Adelaide.

“Safety is very important to Council in all areas of the City and North Adelaide and we are committed to ensuring it is a welcoming place for residents and visitors.

“Some of the aspects of North Adelaide streets that make them attractive, such as leafy trees, also impact on perceptions of safety. Installing more lighting helps make these streets brighter and increases visibility, enhancing feelings of safety.

“Additional CCTV cameras can help deter potential offenders while alerting police to crime as it happens and also help with identification and prosecution. Adelaide’s City Safe CCTV camera network is larger than Melbourne’s or Sydney’s, and in line with practice in most capital cities in Australia, is monitored 24 hrs a day, seven days a week.

“Council has also installed wayfinding signage for those less familiar with North Adelaide, providing information to help orient people in relation to North Adelaide and the City, and advising of the most direct walking routes to busy areas to help them move about safely.

“While Adelaide is a relatively safe city, these initiatives will help improve safety on our streets while providing valuable information to visitors, workers and residents.”
