New $3.5 million BMX track coming to South Adelaide

Posted On August 29, 2016

South Adelaide will be the recipient of a new world class BMX track thanks to $3.5 million in funding grants. The new BMX track will be named after Sam Willoughby, a local Olympic silver medallist.

The Sam Willoughby International BMX Track will be built in O’Halloran Hill, located in the south of Adelaide. This area was earmarked for the project thanks to BMX participation rates increasing by 100% in SA since 2011.

The $3.5 million project is being partially funded by the State Government, to the tune of $2 million. The rest of the project is being supported by the Marion and Onkaparinga councils who are contributing $750,000 each.

Recreation and Sport Minister Leon Bignell spoke highly of the project, stating that “The new track will support our international-level riders and attract major events to South Australia. Currently South Australia does not have a UCI standard BMX facility and can’t attract national-level BMX events.”

“The UCI is the international body that governs competitive cycling for all disciplines.

Without having a UCI BMX track in SA, riders have had to move interstate in order to further develop their skills and progress towards elite pathways.

We want to give future generations a state of the art track where they can train and compete on their way to the highest level of competition including the Olympic Games”

Sam was born in Adelaide in 1991, and since then has become known as one of the world’s best BMX riders.  He has been the worlds #1 BMX rider on numerous occasions, and won a silver medal in the BMX race category.

Willoughby was naturally pleased by the news, “When I asked if I wanted to have the track named after me I was taken aback and truly honoured. I heard the news last Friday after a disappointing run in the Olympic final, this put a smile on my face.

Now all I can think about is cutting the ribbon and riding and racing on this new facility with all my fellow South Australians. With this facility the sky is the limit on how many world calibre riders South Australia can now produce”.

It is expected that the track will help bring more international BMX events to South Australia.
