Road and rail services to be integrated in Leigh Creek

Posted On November 9, 2016

Bowmans Rail has been awarded a $200,000 Upper Spencer Gulf and Outback Futures Program grant to establish the intermodal container terminal, just outside of the Leigh Creek township.

The facility will use the existing rail infrastructure between Port Augusta and Leigh Creek to transfer imported and domestic freight from Adelaide to Leigh Creek. It will then transfer the inbound freight by road to the Cooper Basin.

The intermodal will also provide an option for back-loading minerals for the emerging mining industry in Leigh Creek.

Bowmans Rail is a South Australian intermodal rail and container terminal operations company servicing the resource and agricultural sectors in South Australia.

The $2 million Upper Spencer Gulf and Outback Futures Program is a once-off grants program, which opened in November last year in recognition of the challenges brought about by the downturn of the resources sector and the closure of the Port Augusta power station and Leigh Creek coal mine.

The program supports the delivery of small projects contributing to the economic diversification, resilience and capacity building of Upper Spencer Gulf and Outback communities creating sustainable economic benefits to the region and the State.

This project supports the State Government’s economic priority of ‘Unlocking the full potential of South Australia’s resources, energy and renewable assets’.

Regional Development Minister Geoff Brock spoke of the project and the benefits it will have.

Bowmans Rail, through the Leigh Creek Intermodal, will provide an alternative transport method to cater for the oil and gas industry in the Far North, broadening the competitiveness of the region and improving its economic prosperity.

This project, with the support of the Upper Spencer Gulf and Outback Futures Program, will stimulate new business activity, support community sustainability and create job opportunities for the region.

Establishing the Leigh Creek intermodal will invest a project total of $800,000 into the local economy and create five new ongoing positions.
